Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has called a parliamentary election for 13 April, according to a government statement.

Syria's last parliamentary election was in 2012 and they are held every four years.

A ceasefire agreed by Russia and the US is due to come into effect this weekend in an attempt to find a political solution to the conflict.
