Six US soldiers have been charged with stealing more than $1 million worth of Army gear and then selling it on eBay.

The items included sniper telescopes, machine gun parts, communication headsets, body armour and medical supplies, a government statement said.

The haul was sold to eBay customers in Russia, China, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Lithuania, Moldova, Malaysia, Romania and Mexico.

The soldiers, based in Fort Campbell in Tennessee and Kentucky, were charged along with two others on Wednesday.

They each face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
