A drama teacher from Mercy College in Belfast, who previously taught at London’s prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts, has been shortlisted for a $1m education prize.
Peter Ferris, 49, taught the likes of singer Louise Redknapp and comedian Russell Brand while at Italia Conti.
He is now one of just four UK teachers in the running for next year’s Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize.
The top 50 candidates have been shortlisted from more than 20,000 nominations and applications from 179 countries around the world.
It aims to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession and shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
The final 10 candidates will be announced in February next year, while the winner will be announced at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai on Sunday 19 March.
