Crusaders took a big step towards retaining the Danske Bank Premiership title after coming from behind to defeat Cliftonville 3-2 at Solitude on Saturday.

Michael Carvill gave the champions the lead midway through the first-half when the midfielder fired home from close range past Jason Mooney in the Cliftonville goal.

Stephen Baxter’s side could have doubled their lead moments later but Mooney made an excellent save to deny Jordan Owens with a header at the back post.

Cliftonville equalised just before half-time when Jay Donnelly crossed for Levi Ives to score a scorcher following a wonderful passing move.

A minute after the restart Ives gave Cliftonville the lead for the first time in the game thumping home another stunning strike to send the home fans into raptures.

But with Cliftonville in control, Jordan Owens dragged Crusaders level. Paul Heatley made space down the left to cross for Owens who headed home the equaliser.

And just four minutes later, Owens did it again. This time the Crusaders front man rose to meet a cross from the right to power home a header which squirmed over the line.

The result leaves Crusaders one point ahead of Linfield in the race for the league title with just three-games to go.
