Brokenshire taking independent advice on MLAs' pay
Secretary of State James Brokenshire has said he is taking advice on the issue of whether Northern Ireland's MLAs should continue to keep being paid, in the absence of power-sharing at Stormont.
With the parties still unable to reach an agreement in the protracted talks process, the Northern Ireland secretary made a statement on Wednesday saying a budget would now be brought forward at Westminster.
Mr Brokenshire added: "I will also be seeking independent advice on what steps should be taken to reflect the current circumstances in MLA pay."
Last month he said he was considering new laws on the issue of local politicians' salaries.
They are paid £49,500 a year, or about £41,250 in the months since Stormont has been shut amid the current impasse.
Mr Brokenshire said it was unlikely the Executive could be revived in time for NI's politicians to determine the budget by the end of the month.
He stayed in Belfast to outline the state of play and is expected to speak in Westminster on the issue on Thursday.
