Police had to restore order in Newry Magistrates' Court as a Portadown man appeared charged with murdering a 33-year-old father-of-two.

A woman was intercepted by PSNI officers as she attempted to reach 27-year-old Daniel Carroll in the dock, while family and friends of the deceased shouted abuse at the accused.

Brian Phelan, who is 33-years-old and from Bessbrook in Co Armagh, died after being stabbed on the rural Carrivekeeny Road outside Newry in Co Down.

Carroll, from Edward Street in Portadown, spoke only to confirm the charge against him during the hearing on Saturday 28 July.

After order was restored in the court, he was remanded in custody by the judge after a detective constable said she could connect him to the murder charge.

No bail application was made by the defendant's lawyer.

A release licence from prison involving a previous criminal matter was also revoked, the judge said.

Carroll will reappear before the court via video-link from prison on Wednesday 8 August.
