A priest has stepped aside from his role following a historical complaint brought to the Diocese of Armagh and reported to gardaí in the Republic of Ireland.

Father Gerard McAleer, the parish priest in Donaghmore in Co Tyrone, is said to have voluntarily stepped aside from his pastoral duties because of the concerns raised.

A statement from the Archdiocese of Armagh added: “The information received is historic and relates to a time prior to his time in ministry in the Archdiocese, and indeed prior to his ordination as a priest.

“The relevant statutory authorities in Northern Ireland have been informed.”
