A young infant has been critically injured after being hit by a car on the Movilla Road in Newtownards.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it responded to a 999 call following the incident, which happened at about 5.20pm on Thursday.

Two rapid response paramedics, two doctors and an A&E crew attended the scene, while the HEMS team also attended by car, according to a NIAS spokesman.

“After initial treatment at the scene, the child has been taken by ambulance to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children,” he said.

Police later confirmed that the child was in a critical condition.

A 21-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the collision involving a silver Volkswagen Golf, or who may have dash-cam footage, has been asked to contact police on 101.
