Maghaberry prisoner absconds while on home leave

A prisoner convicted over gun crime has absconded while on home leave from Maghaberry Prison.

James Daniel Hunter, 56, failed to return to the high-security facility near Lisburn at the weekend.

He had been allowed home during a period of pre-release testing.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Prison Service said: “We are focused on returning him to custody and we would ask anyone with information to contact the PSNI on 101 immediately.”

Hunter was convicted of a number of charges, including possession of a firearm or ammunition with intent to endanger life, attempted robbery and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He is described as being around 5ft 7ins tall and of medium build, with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

When last seen, he was wearing a blue parka coat with a fur hood, a grey sweatshirt and blue jeans.
