A 17-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of two young women in Coleraine.
The victims, who are both 22, were attacked late on Sunday night while walking in the Beresford Avenue area.
The 17-year-old was arrested nearby and brought to Coleraine Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The boy can’t be named for legal reasons.
His mother was in the court as he was charged with attempted murder and with the possession of an offensive weapon.
The teenage boy spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges.
A police officer said he believes he can connect the boy to the charges.
The officer told the court that the two women were approached by three males.
He said they were then stabbed with an knife for no apparent reason.
One victim sustained a punctured lung as well as stab wounds.
The other was stabbed four times.
The court heard that both are recovering but one of the victims is still receiving treatment in hospital.
The teenager’s solicitor said he denies the charges.
No bail application was made.
The teenager was remanded into custody at the juvenile detention centre and will appear before the court again via video link next month.
