Finnebrogue Artisan in Downpatrick have announced a 25% increase to their workforce after a £17m investment

The cash boost will mean 125 new jobs being created at the plant by 2022.

The factory manufactures nitrate-free bacon - the only factory to do so in Europe.

Chemicals such as nitrates are added to processed meats and are believed to contribute to some cases of bowel cancer.

Chairman Denis Lynn says that “there was never a nitrite-free version of any meat available in the UK.

“It doesn’t matter what Brexit does, politics doesn’t interest us. Consumers and high quality products are what interests us. Brexit really doesn’t have any relevance to this business.”

Invest NI has praised the announcement, predicting that the new jobs will add more than £3m to the Northern Ireland economy each year.

The factory is already used by culinary giants such as Rick Stein and Heston Blumenthal.
