A man has been arrested after an attempt was made to hijack a car in Londonderry with a woman and two children in the passenger seats.
The man got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle just before 1am on Thursday, in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry, and tried to drive off.
When he was unable to do so, he then tried to take the handbag of the woman in the front passenger seat.
He ended up fleeing the scene empty-handed and the woman and the two children in the back were left unharmed.
Police say they arrested a suspect a short time later on suspicion of a number of offences, including attempted hijacking, attempted robbery and being in charge of a vehicle while unfit through drink or drugs.
PSNI Detective Sergeant Richard Donnell said: 'I would appeal to anyone in the area last night who may have seen the incident to please get in contact with detectives in Strand Road by calling 101.
“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
