A young boy has lifted the remains of a pipe bomb after it detonated in a garden in Londonderry.
Police say the device was discovered at a property in Curlew Way in the Waterside area of the city on Tuesday evening.
It’s believed the boy picked up the device at around 6pm, although it had detonated some time before.
"The fact a young boy found it and lifted it shows the blatant disregard by those responsible for leaving it there."
The PSNI say enquiries are at an early stage and have appealed to anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area to contact them.
Detective Inspector Michael Winters said: "While this was not a live device, the fact a young boy found it and lifted it shows the blatant disregard by those responsible for leaving it there. It was completely reckless.
“I want to appeal to anyone who has information about this to contact detectives at Strand Road on the non emergency number 101, quoting reference number 2084 of 21/05/19."
