PSNI Chief Constable Simon Byrne has warned that dissident republicans are becoming increasingly determined to kill his police officers.
During a visit to Londonderry, in the wake of recent attacks in the North West, Mr Byrne stated that the PSNI needs 800 more officers to deal with the threat posed by dissidents.
Among the most recent attacks was the mortar bomb planted in Strabane, aimed at a police station.
Trouble also flared in the Creggan area of Derry, where a bomb with a command wire for detonation was found.
“That’s the one tragedy no police chief wants to face – the loss of one of their officers. It’s your worst nightmare,” the Chief Constable said.
“I think the scary thing is it’s only Lady Luck that has prevented that.”
