A man has escaped injury in a suspected arson attack in Newtownards on Thursday night.
It happened at a property in the John Street area of the town with police receiving a report shortly before 10.25pm.
A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody.
Detective Sergeant Westbury said: "Officers attended, along with colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, to find a smoke-filled apartment.
"One man, found within, was escorted from the premises. Thankfully, it would appear that he hasn’t sustained any serious injuries.
“The main damage to the property is scorch damage to the front door.
"We are treating this as arson and we could, have course, have been looking at a very different picture this morning."
Officers are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
