A teenage girl has died in a farm accident in Newry.

The 14-year-old has been named locally as Abbie Nummy. She was a pupil at Newry High School.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon.

The PSNI said it is preparing a report for the coroner following 'a sudden death in a tragic accident'.

Eight people died in farming accidents in Northern Ireland in 2018, a rise on the previous year.

The Health and Safety Executive said it is 'currently investigating the circumstances' surrounding the accident.

Ulster Farmers' Union deputy president Victor Chestnutt said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time.

"It is a tragic reminder that farms are busy workplaces that can sometimes be dangerous. You can never be too careful when you are on a farm.

"No farming family wants to find themselves in this situation and I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family."
