Northern Ireland patient being tested for coronavirus

A man is being treated for symptoms of coronavirus at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The patient arrived at the hospital showing symptoms which may be associated with the condition but it will be some time before test results are returned.

The Belfast Trust confirmed the patient is being treated while they await those results.

A spokesperson added that doctors were hopeful they will eventually be discharged.

The news of the potential case in Northern Ireland comes as three people in Scotland are also being tested for the new virus infection which has killed 17 people in China out of over 500 confirmed cases.

All four of the patients travelled to Scotland from Wuhan - the Chinese city where the virus is thought to have originated - in the past two weeks and were showing symptoms of respiratory problems, a key indicator of the virus.

Tests are being carried out on the patients but none have been confirmed as having the new coronavirus.
