Emergency services have dealt with a large blaze that broke out at a tyre depot in Ballymoney on Tuesday.

The fire resulted in huge plumes of thick black smoke coming from the industrial premises at Rodeing Foot.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and residents were asked to keep door and windows closed due to the smoke while fire crews worked at the scene.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used five jets to extinguish the fire," a spokesperson for Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue said.

"The fire is now extinguished and crews are damping down the area."

The spokesperson added that the incident is "ongoing" and said there was no information yet about the cause of the blaze.

Local SDLP MLA Cara Hunter described the fire as "devastating" and praised the work of emergency crews at the scene.

“The images of a large fire at an industrial premises on Rodeing Foot in Ballymoney are deeply distressing," she said.

"I would urge anyone with information relating to this incident to contact the police."
