A team of prisoners at Maghaberry have been producing braille books for children in south east Africa.
The books - including Walt Disney’s Peter Pan, Jungle Book and Bambi, as well as Roald Dahl’s The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me - were presented to three church charities for distribution in schools in Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya.
A dozen mostly life-sentence prisoners made them over a six-week period, with pages of braille created on special washable material and book covers manufactured by the inmates, before each was individually bound.
Prison Service head Ronnie Armour said: “This is an excellent example of how prisoners are making a real difference to the lives of people through rehabilitative activities.”
Investigations are underway after a prisoner died in custody at Maghaberry.
The Prison Service said the 57-year-old man passed away on Thursday morning. His next of kin have been informed.
As with standard procedure, the PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have launched investigations into the death.
Ronnie Armour, Head of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, said: "I would like to extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of the prisoner.
“My thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
