Former Conservative Cabinet minister Lord Mayhew, who served as attorney general and Northern Ireland secretary during critical events for both posts, has died at the age of 86, his family said today.

Mayhew was secretary of state under John Major, between 1992 and 1997, the longest-serving minister to have held the role. He stood down at the 1997 election.
