Fianna Fáil has challenged First Minister Arlene Foster’s comments about the Irish Government in her party conference speech.

Ms Foster told DUP members that Dublin representatives are “sent out around the world to talk down our economy and to attempt to poach our investors”.

Reacting, Brendan Smith TD said no Irish Government, "irrespective of who is in office", talks down Northern Ireland.

“In fact, the opposite happens,” he added, before calling for “increased cooperation”.

The chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs said: “The First Minister can show leadership on this matter, and work with the Irish Government to make this a reality.

“I hope she takes the chance.”
