The so-called Islamic State has claimed a Dublin-born man has carried out a suicide bomb attack in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

It is believed the man was Terence Kelly, who changed his name to Khalid Kelly.

An ISIS propaganda site says the man, in his 40s, drove a vehicle packed with explosives towards at Iraqi forces west of Mosul and detonated it.

Social media posts, including some from ISIS-linked accounts, claim Kelly, who is understood to be a former nurse and a convert to Islam after working in Saudi Arabia, died in the name of the Islamic State.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs says it is seeking to verify the claims.

There has so far been no official confirmation Mr Kelly is dead.
