The DUP has welcomed the appointment of Gavin Williamson as defence secretary.

Mr Williamson, who was involved in securing the agreement between the Conservatives and DUP following this year’s General Election, takes over from Michael Fallon, who stood down on Wednesday in the wake of sexual harassment claims at Westminster.

DUP MP Gavin Robinson said: “Gavin Williamson is a good friend of Northern Ireland and he was critical in helping secure the agreement between the Conservative Party and the DUP.

“I look forward to working with Gavin through the Defence Select Committee and particularly on issues around advancing the Military Covenant and veterans issues.”
