A man who tried to kill an Asian dentist in a racially-motivated attack at a north Wales supermarket has been given a life sentence.
Zack Davies attacked Dr Sarandev Bhambra with a hammer and a machete at the Mold supermarket in January.
Dr Bhambra, from Leeds, suffered "life-changing" injuries in the attack, but has made a gradual recovery.
He now hopes to return to work in the near future.
Today he addressed journalists outside court.
Imagine your own sons, daughters, brothers or sisters facing my reality, and you may begin to understand and appreciate what my family and I have been going through in the last nine months.
He told journalists he had "purposely shunned the media spotlight", due to the trauma and stress of the attack.
He said he had been undergoing intense physiotherapy and rehabilitation under the care of a team in his home city.
I am convinced that the background behind the incident has not been explored fully. Was I targeted? By his own admission, Davies was a man who harboured a hatred for non-whites, a history of violence, and always carried a knife. Could this attack have been prevented? I reiterate now, in my opinion, had this been committed by a non-white, the collective media and indeed the investigating authorities would have dealt with this as an act of terrorism.
North Wales Police have been asked to comment.
Dr Bhambra he had "no emotion" about his attacker and had attempted to direct his energies elsewhere.
Branding Davies "a coward", he said it was "abhorrent" that his attacker claimed he was honouring Lee Rigby by carrying out the attack.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to Lee Rigby and his family". he added.
I applaud this and will be forever grateful to Peter for his timely and possibly life-saving intervention. Peter has shown exceptional bravery.
Dr Bhambra also paid tribute to medical teams who've helped him, along with police liaison officers.
"My family have been brilliant and have been supportive".
Incidents of this nature are avoidable and have no place in our multicultural society. There are no winners here, and true justice is never served. I will never understand racial hatred. What possesses a man to have such disdain for another person?
