Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans has claimed that the European Union serves Wales' interests and reflects Welsh values. She was speaking at the launch of the party's campaign for Wales to vote to remain in the EU in the referendum on UK membership.

The Plaid MEP is part of a group in the European Parliament that is strongly critical of many EU policies, notably the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the United States. They see the proposed treaty as putting the interests of big business ahead of those of consumers.

But today she argued that membership of the European Union brings economic, social and cultural benefits to Wales and that its role in establishing and preserving peace and stability "should never be underestimated".

UKIP responded by claiming that Plaid Cymru's pro-EU stance was incompatible with Welsh independence.
