A dog from Penarth has reached the finals of the UK's largest pet slimming competition.

Kaspa the labrador tips the scales at 7st 7lb and is almost 65% overweight. He has been selected to compete against 12 other fat pets – including dogs, cats and even a rabbit.

The two-year old pet's weight-gain has been caused by his bin-raiding and scavenging ways.

His owner Maria Daley is committed to improve his mobility issues by helping him shed those excess pounds.

Kaspa will embark on a strict six-month diet and exercise programme as part of the PDSA Pet Fit Club.

The PDSA Pet Fit Club has already helped 74 dogs, 32 cats and six rabbits lose a total 63 stone 11lb - equivalent to over 400 bags of sugar, 6,500 tins of tuna, 7,000 sausages or four heavyweight boxers.
