A donkey believed to be Britain's oldest has died at the age of 53 - just a year younger than the oldest in the world.

The donkey, named Friday, had competed in donkey derbys and rodeos since the 1960s.

His owners in Llandysul, Mid Wales, said they were "devastated".

He died from natural causes.

We are all absolutely devastated but we couldn't do any more for him.

Wendy said "mischievous" Friday had free run of her farm home, where she lives with husband Darren and their two sons.

He was naughty and mischievous and spent his time in our garden being fed bread every day.

The record for the oldest documented age for a donkey belongs to Suzy, a jenny from Glenwood, New Mexico, USA, who died in 2002 at the age of 54.
