A husband 'smothered' his wife after collecting her from a care home before killing himself at their countryside home, an inquest has heard.

Richard Sergeant, 71, and Jane Sergeant, 70, were found dead by police in Pwllmeyric on Wednesday 4 October.

Mrs Sergeant had been living in a residential home after suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Retired teacher Mr Sergeant collected his wife from the home, for a day trip - before driving her 15 miles back to their five-bedroom house in Orchid Meadow.

An inquest heard police later arrived at the house to find Mrs Sergeant suffocated and Mr Sergeant hanged.

Gwent Coroner's Court was told Mrs Sergeant was discovered lying on the floor of the home near Chepstow, Gwent.

Coroner David Bowen was told a post mortem examination found Mrs Sergeant had been smothered.

Mr Sergeant and his wife, had lived at the home for more than 30 years and have two adult sons who have since moved away.

A neighbour living on the estate said:

We wondered what was happening at 3am as there was a lot of police activity.

I believe she was suffering from Parkinsons and not very well but I hadn't seen her around for a while.

It was a shock to see the police there at that time - we had no idea what was going on.

The inquest was adjourned for two months for police to complete their inquiries but officers say they are not looking for anyone else.
