First Minister won't attend Carl Sargeant's funeral

Carl Sargeant's funeral will be held on Friday

The First Minister won't attend the funeral of the former Welsh Government minister Carl Sargeant.

It's understood that the Sargeant family has asked Carwyn Jones not to attend the service which will be held on Friday. Mr Jones says he respects the family's wishes.

A large number of politicians will be amongst mourners in Connah's Quay including most of the Welsh Government cabinet and the Labour party's UK Leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Confirming that he wouldn't be attending, Carwyn Jones issued this statement:

Lisa and I would have liked to attend the funeral on Friday to pay our respects to our friend. However, we of course respect the wishes of the family at this time, and would hope they can celebrate Carl’s life in peace and without distraction.

– Carwyn Jones AM, First Minister

The First Minister has been criticised for his handling of allegations levelled against Mr Sargeant whom he sacked in a cabinet reshuffle.
