The number of patients accessing cardiac rehabilitation in Wales following a heart attack increased for the second year running.

Research from the British Heart Foundation Cymru (BHF Cymru) show 51% of patients accessed the service.

Statistics show:

  • Uptake for cardiac rehabilitation across Wales increased by 40 patients in 2017
  • Wales has the highest female participation in the UK
  • Wales has the greatest increase in patients reducing depression rates in the UK

Cardiac rehabilitation following a heart attack can help achieve better physical and psycho-social outcomes for patients.

However, there are still over 3,000 heart patients missing out on cardiac rehabilitation, which puts them at risk of suffering another heart attack.

Patients missing out on cardiac rehabilitation

It is hugely encouraging that more patients are accessing cardiac rehabilitation services than ever before, but there is still much more to be done.

Thousands of heart patients are still missing out on this effective service and are more at risk of suffering a deadly heart attack.

There are also delays in patients getting access to care.
