Gambling is becoming a growing public health issue, according to the Chief Medical Officer for Wales.

Dr Frank Atherton has outlined the negative health effects of gambling in an annual report launched today.

In the last 12 months over 60% of adults in Wales gambled according to the report. While it is simply a source of entertainment for many the potential financial difficulty can lead to anxiety, stress and depression.

Number of people in Wales estimated to be at risk of problem gambling

Dr Atherton is urging the Welsh Government to agree to a plan to reduce gambling-related harm. He is also calling for the UK Government to restrict advertising of gambling products.

While it may be harmless fun for some, gambling has great potential to cause harm to individuals and can have devastating effects on the people closest to them, and communities.

There are still big gaps in our understanding of this issue, and we need to reduce stigma around gambling so that more people who require help come forward.
