Weightlifter Gareth Evans from Holyhead is the first competitor to win gold for Wales in the Commonwealth Games.

The 31 year-old painter and decorator lifted 299kg winning the first gold medal for Wales.

Competing in the mens 69kg, Evans was followed by Indika Dissanayake Mudiyanselage representing Sri Lanka and Deepak Lather for India.
