Milk bottle sales booming as consumers turn their backs on plastic

A Barry milkman says sales of bottled milk are booming as consumers look for alternatives to plastic containers.

Gareth Jones of Jones Dairies says he's been distributing 2,000 more glass bottles a week since the start of the year.

Milk bottles can be re-used up to 30 times before being recycled and many milk floats are run on electricity.

We've done glass bottles since glass bottles started, and we've been recycling before people heard of recycling and we've used electric vehicles before people used electric vehicles.

So we like to think of it as the world has finally caught up with the milkman.

Thirty years ago the traditional milkman was in his heyday but the industry has since been in decline.

But milkmen say they have been leading the way on sustainability for decades.

We're very pleased that people are thinking about the waste they are creating and how they are reusing materials but not that surprised because we do know that across Wales companies and individuals really are wanting to do the right thing.
