The body of a man washed ashore in Anglesey 33-years ago has been identified as 63-year old, Joseph Brendan Dowley from Kilkenny.

On 9 November 1985 an RAF airman running along Rhosneigr beach discovered the body of Mr Dowley. Police launched an extensive investigation but were unable to identify the body and the man was placed in an unmarked grave in Menai Bridge Cemetery.

Now 33-years later, the latest DNA technology has been used to identify Joseph Brendan Dowley after his remains were exhumed in June this year. The investigation was the joint efforts of the Garda missing persons bureau and North Wales Police.

Detective Sergeant Don Kenyon led the investigation.

"We have received a very positive result from the familial DNA analysis of the remains exhumed from Menai Bridge Cemetery. Mr Dowley's family have been kept updated with this most recent development."
