New figures show that many of our towns and cities are saturated with fast food outlets.
Almost three quarters of takeaways in Blaenau Gwent provide fast food. In Caerphilly it is two thirds. Wales has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in Europe.
The figures come from the Office for National Statistics which examined UK local authority areas where fast food outlets represent more than half of all restaurants and takeaways:
- Blaenau Gwent: 73%
- Caerphilly: 66%
- Rhondda Cynon Taf: 63%
- Torfaen: 59%
- Neath Port Talbot: 53%
- Merthyr Tyfil: 53%
The report follows research reported by the British Medical Journal that suggests exposure to many pizza and fried-food outlets can nearly double your chances of obesity.
