Menopause cafe aims to break down stigma in the workplace

The first workplace menopause cafe in Wales has been launched by Velindre University NHS Trust.

Open to staff of all ages and genders, visitors to the cafe at the Welsh Blood Service in Pontyclun are encouraged to talk about the menopause, share their stories, and ask questions.

Organisers hope the cafe and the discussions had will help remove some of the stigma around the menopause.

Karen Wright, Assistant Director of Workforce at Velindre University NHS Trust, says workplaces can no longer ignore or allow colleagues experiencing the menopause to suffer in silence.

For many, if not most women, the Menopause is an extremely personal and difficult experience that they often have to go through alone and without support. Each person's experience will be a different one. But it's also important that we acknowledge that the effects of this condition are felt by others - partners, friends and family and yes sometimes colleagues at work.

Health Secretary Vaughan Gething has backed the project, calling himself a "strong advocate" of the idea.
