'A genius and visionary': Welsh designer pays heartfelt tribute to mentor Karl Lagerfeld

Welsh designer Julien Macdonald has paid tribute to fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld, the creative director of French luxury clothing brand Chanel, died at the age of 85 following a period of ill health.

Macdonald said he was "honoured to have been Karl's protege".

The Welshman designed knitwear with Lagerfeld in the 1990s.

I am very sad, of the passing of my mentor and great friend @KarlLagerfeld.

I am honoured to have been Karl's protege from 1994-1997 whilst working with him designing knitwear at Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld.

A genius and visionary, he will be forever missed but never forgotten.
