A chid abuser who fled abroad to avoid justice has been sentenced to 23 years in prison.

40-year-old David Hayes from Llanrwst in the Conwy Valley left the UK in 2015 after making a first court appearance on child sex offence charges.

He failed to appear at Mold crown court in December of that year to enter pleas on the charges.

The former press officer for Bangor City FC fled to the Netherlands and Brazil which led to a world wide alert and appeal before being eventually arrested last year in Granada in Spain where he was found teaching English.

Hayes was found guilty of seven charges of rape, two assaults, and three charges of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Judge Rhys Rowlands warned Hayes he would not be eligible for automatic parole after serving half of his sentence.

Following the sentencing, an NSPCC Cymru spokesperson said the young victims must be 'commended' for their bravery:

The long jail term imposed reflects the danger he poses. He forced his young victims to relive in court the abuse they suffered at his hands and they must be commended for their bravery at speaking out and helping to put Hayes behind bars where he cannot hurt others.

While justice has finally caught up with Hayes, it is important that the survivors of his abuse receive the support they need to help rebuild their lives.
