The service described an operation to protect properties as "arduous" on "dangerous terrain".

Crews worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control as it encroached close to properties in the St Thomas area and Port Tennant area of Kilvey Hill.

Six properties were evacuated as a precaution, with help from partner agencies. Our Control staff worked extremely hard dealing with over 300 emergency calls for this incident during the course of the evening.

We work closely with our Fire Control staff to determine the extent of the incident, which ensures that as a Service we can successfully manage the situation to reduce the risk to life, environmental and landscape impact.

Grass fires such as these put a considerable drain on our resources and can affect our response to more serious incident potentially putting lives in danger. These incidents result in considerable costs to our communities and the environment.
