A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his wife in a hammer attack.

John Garner, 51, admitted killing Teresa Garner in the bathroom of the house they shared near Holywell, Flintshire, on 24 October last year.

Judge Rowlands said that Teresa Garner lost her life in "quite the most horrendous circumstances in her own home."

The jury heard how Garner then rang 999 and told the operator he had "murdered his Missus" who was found with 16 separate head wounds.

Mrs Garner's children have provided the following statement:

Today John Garner has been found guilty of the brutal murder of Teresa Garner... The events of that morning changed the lives of so many people, none more so than her children...

Their lives have been turned upside down as a result of the tragic events of that day. They have not only lost their mother, they have lost their home. All of which has resulted in them living apart from each other. These are the harsh consequences of the selfish act of John Garner.

– Detective Inspector Chris Bell

It is totally unacceptable that in the UK two women a week are killed at the hands of a partner or ex-partner. We all need to continue to raise awareness in helping reduce and eradicate all forms of domestic violence and will work with our partners to break this cycle of destruction.

I would encourage anyone who finds themselves in an abusive relationship to seek the support that is available. We will robustly investigate domestic abuse, bringing offenders to justice and fully support the victims.

– Detective Inspector Chris Bell

Garner will serve a minimum of 22 years in prison.
