A five-year-old boy from South Wales has died while on holiday on the Greek island of Kos.

Theo Treharne-Jones, from Merthyr Tydfil, is understood to have drowned in a swimming pool at a hotel in Marmari, where he and his family were staying, on Saturday morning.

Local police confirmed the parents had been arrested and later released, in what was described as standard procedure.

A spokesperson for the holiday operator TUI said its team at the resort was offering support to the family.

We are aware of the tragic incident at the Holiday Village Kos, Greece and our thoughts are with the family. Our team in resort is currently supporting the family and we will continue to assist in whatever way we can. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff is our primary concern and our dedicated resort team is working with the authorities and hoteliers. As the matter is currently still under investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.

It is with great sadness that the local authority has heard of the death of one of its young pupils - Theo Treharne-Jones - whilst on holiday on holiday with his family on Kos. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this tragic time.
