Swansea war memorial vandalised with anarchy symbols

A memorial to the war dead was vandalised overnight with red paint and slogans in Swansea

The Boer War Memorial on Swansea’s seafront was vandalised with anarchy symbols, and the words ‘smash empire’ and ‘troops out’.

The action has caused upset to many, including those who have family members recorded on the memorial, which recognises the ultimate sacrifice made by local residents during the South African War, 1900-1902.

A Swansea Council spokesman said work had already been undertaken to remove the damage.

The memorial is located on the foreshore where events and demonstrations will be held as part of the Wales Airshow which takes place on Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7.

And a spokesman for South Wales Police added: “We are aware of this incident and the Swansea city neighbourhood police team will attend today and liaise with the council.”
