A father has been sentenced to nine years in jail after being found guilty of manslaughter.

Matthew Jones had been left alone with his 15-week-old baby Cody for no more than an hour at their home in Ebbw Vale, the court heart. At the time, his partner Paula Williams was visiting her sister.

Judge Mr Justice Simon Picken said the 26-year-old, from Aberdare, had not intended to kill Cody, but "lost it" after becoming "frustrated" when he was unable to stop him from crying.

Newport Crown Court also heard how Cody had "older injuries" including a fractured shoulder, broken ribs and a bleed on the brain.

The jury cleared him of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter last week.

Richard Smith QC, defending Jones, told the court his client had "cared immensely" for Cody before causing his death, and had since shown "genuine remorse".

The injuries in this case were catastrophic and clearly resulted in the death of Cody. That is horrific and traumatic for the family.

We've been able to gather the evidence to present a case to the court which resulted in us obtaining justice for Cody and his family.

Cody Rhys Williams-Jones died in December 2016.

The investigative team undertook extensive lines of enquiry and called on numerous forensic and medical experts that proved that the injuries caused to Cody Rhys Williams-Jones were non accidental and couldn’t have been caused in the manner described by Matthew Jones...

No conviction will ever bring baby Cody back but we hope his family have some sense of peace knowing that Matthew Jones has been held accountable for the death of Cody and will now have a significant period of time in prison to reflect on his actions.
