Police said they expect both directions of the M4 over the bridge will remain closed for the rest of the day.

Traffic is being diverted on to the M48 and motorist are being told to expect longer journey times.

Currently, the bridge is closed east and westbound while engineers assess the damage to the barriers and carry out emergency repair works.

We anticipate the bridge will be closed by the Highways Agency for the remainder of the day. Highways England have confirmed that the westbound carriageway is expected to remain closed between Junction 21 and Junction 23 until at least 6am tomorrow morning. We are advising motorists to take alternative routes today.

Officers are now investigating the circumstances of the collision and asking anyone with any information or anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage is urged to contact Gwent Police on 101.
