Cardiff city centre street to close for two months

Credit: Google Maps

A busy street in Cardiff city centre will close for eight weeks for emergency engineering works.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water says Westgate Street will be shut from from Sunday, 22nd September so they can carry out work on a sewer.

They say the closure is expected to last until 15th November. It will affect the southern end of the street.

The road will be closed from just below the Angel Hotel through to the Guildhall.

All businesses, deliveries and NCP guests will still have access at this point if they approach from Castle Street and tell the traffic operative where they are going.

I understand this is a large amount of time considering it is within the city centre, however due to the nature of the repairs required to the sewer this time is necessary.

As always if the contractor repairs the issue before the planned end date then they will reopen the road as soon as possible, please rest assured this will be monitored daily by myself.

– Cardiff Council spokesperson

The majority of bus stops will continue to operate throughout the period and pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the pavement.

The taxi rank at Lower St Mary Street will be closed to allow some temporary bus stops.
