Man sectioned after killing a 71-year-old in knife attack

Mr Stone was stabbed when he was out walking his dog in February

A man has been sectioned under the mental health act after stabbing 71-year-old Lewis Stone near his holiday home in Borth.

21-year-old David Fleet attacked Mr Stone when he was out walking his dog on the banks of the River Leri on 28th February. Lewis Stone was left with injuries which led to his death three months later.

Mr Fleet admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Swansea crown court heard the attacker was suffering from an episode of schizophrenia.

Judge Paul Thomas described the attack as a "horrific event", but said he could not send Fleet to prison due to his medical condition.

What happened could not have been foreseen. It was a catastrophic event...Mr Stone was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

– Judge Paul Thomas

Judge Thomas issued two orders detaining Fleet in a secure mental unit and without limit of time.
