There has been a spate of manhole cover thefts in the Aberavon area in Neath Port Talbot. The council is alerting the public of the potential danger.

Nine manhole covers were first stolen between late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. The number then rose to 23 later that day.

The council have called this spate of thefts "extremely alarming" and those behind it have created a real public safety issue.

The thefts seem to be in and around Castle Street and Victoria Road in Port Talbot so the council are urging members of the public to be wary.

There will be a considerable cost to the authority in terms of replacement and work hours spent finding exactly where these thefts have taken place and carrying out re-instatement.
