Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce has been nominated for the best actor Oscar for playing Pope Francis in the film The Two Popes.
The film, which was released at the end of last year, tells the story of the conservative Pope Benedict and the liberal future Pope Francis who must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church.
Sir Anthony Hopkins, 82, who won an Academy Award in 1992 for his role in The Silence of the Lambs, was also nominated for the best supporting actor for his role in the film.
Pryce, 72, who was born in Flintshire, is up against the likes of Joaquin Phoenix for Joker, Leonardo DiCaprio for Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, Antonio Banderas for Pain And Glory and Adam Driver for Marriage Story.
Their nominations come after Welsh actor Taron Egerton scooped a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Sir Elton John in the film Rocketman.
He also received a BAFTA nomination for his performance, but Egerton's name was absent from the Oscar nomination list for Leading Actor on Monday.
Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin were nominated for the best original song Oscar for (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again.
Within minutes of the nominations being announced, Taron Egerton was trending on social media.
