The M4 and other major roads in Wales remained quiet as motorists followed official advice not to take unnecessary journeys during the coronavirus lockdown.

Photographs show empty roads as the country enters its second week under strict new travel restrictions.

Police have also been on patrols throughout the weekend to ensure people are following advice on social distancing.

It comes as police have been granted new powers to arrest people ignoring lockdown rules.

Individuals are only allowed to leave their home for the following very limited purposes:

  • Shopping for basic necessities and supplies, which should be as infrequently as possible
  • One form of exercise a day - for example, a run, walk or cycle - alone or with members of their household
  • Any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
  • Travelling to and from work, but only where they cannot reasonably practicably work from home.

Police officers can issue a fine of £30 to people who do not follow these rules, rising to £120 if a subsequent fine is issued.
