A man has pleaded guilty to setting fire to Aberfan Chapel. Daniel Brown told police he gets a 'kick' out of arson.
Daniel Brown, of Nixonville, Merthyr Vale, was charged with reckless arson with threat to endanger life. Much of the chapel at Aberfan was destroyed by the fire last month.
Brown told police he gets "a kick" out of seeing the fire service turn up. He set his own house on fire when he was nine years old. The court heard that he had called in the emergency services himself when they didn't turn up and "enjoyed being involved in this type of activity".
Wearing a grey t-shirt with short brown hair, Brown confirmed his name and guilty plea. The judge at Merthyr Crown Court told him to expect a lengthy prison sentence.
Psychiatric reports will be completed before he is sentenced next month.
A 27-year-old man from Merthyr Tydfil has been arrested in connection with a fire at the historic Aberfan chapel.
Fire crews were called to the building in the early hours of Saturday morning where investigations found that the fire was started deliberately.
The fire was extinguished by South wales Fire and Rescue Services but much of the building was destroyed.
Anyone with any information concerning the incident is urged to contact South Wales Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Dramatic footage caught by eyewitnesses shows the scale of the fire and subsequent damage to the historic Aberfan chapel.
Fire crews responded to the incident at just before 2 this morning and have been re-inspecting the scene throughout the day.
Structural engineers have also visited the chapel, with Jennie Griffiths of South Wales Fire Service tweeting the structure was "in danger of collapse"
The chapel was used as a mortuary by the Aberfan community after the coal tip disaster of 1966, where mud and debris flooded Pantglas Junior School killing 116 children and 28 adults.
Structural engineers will attend an historic chapel in Aberfan later after a fire broke out early this morning, causing significant damage.
Five fire engines dealt with the flames after being alerted at around 2 this morning, but they have since left.
4 properties surrounding the chapel were also evacuated, but there are no reports of any injuries.
Aberfan Road has been closed by police in both directions until further notice.
